Director’s Thoughts
This year so far has had its fair share of rewards and challenges. In particular I have continued to see some of the ways in which the school has benefitted individuals and it’s very exciting to feel that in a small way we are making a difference in the community.
Parents, who send their children to GIEC, say that they appreciate, not only the opportunity for children to learn English, but the interactive and interesting teaching methods. Using the British curriculum as the basis of our educational programme, we also aim to include important areas of learning relating to Azeri culture.
Training is a very important part of our operations and we try to provide opportunities for local teachers to broaden their knowledge of education, develop their teaching skills and gain new ideas from a range of people – mainly those with a western educational Background.
We currently have six sponsored children and five children with special educational needs. A special programme for each of these children’s is aimed at trying to help them to reach their potential, with individual targets set at an appropriate level, as well as trying to ensure that the children are well integrated into their classes. This is seen to benefit all of the children – helping them to learn to accept and celebrate differences in our community.
At the moment, we have managed to secure some funding mainly for the development of our Nursery and Reception classes (kindergarten). Our ultimate hope is to be able to attain a licence for this section of our operations but in order to do this we need to develop our property in a number of ways including separating off the kindergarten from the main section of the building and installing a new bathroom and sleeping ‘nap room’. Our hope is that in this way, our numbers of children will gradually increase and that this will put us on a better financial footing.
